    What is World Cleanup Day?

World Cleanup Day is a global social action program that unites volunteers, governments, and organizations to remove litter from beaches, rivers, forests, streets, and other public spaces. It began in Estonia in 2008, grew into the Let’s Do It World movement, and became an official global event on 15 September 2018.

In 2023, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed 20 September as World Cleanup Day.

This year, millions will take part in activities around the world to not only clean up waste but also raise awareness about mismanaged waste and inspire long-term environmental solutions.

    Why It Matters for Langkawi

Langkawi, known as Malaysia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, relies heavily on its natural beauty and marine biodiversity. However, plastic pollution and coastal debris threaten its fragile ecosystems.

    The Langkawi cleanup event will:

    • Collect and sort plastic and non-biodegradable waste from beaches.
    • Educate participants on the impact of marine pollution on biodiversity.
    • Promote sustainable tourism practices among visitors and local businesses.

By joining this effort, participants will help ensure that Langkawi’s pristine coastline remains a sanctuary for wildlife and a treasure for future generations.
